Practitioner should- resolve firmly before meditation as follows

  • I will remain delightful in all circumstances.
  • I will feel favourable even if circumstances are adverse.
  • I will be free from self- praise and other’s criticism.
  • Spiritual practices will be given top priority in life by me.
  • I will practice with no aspiration-- worldly or out worldly.
  • I will develop the feeling of fraternity.
  • I will follow the time- schedule fixed for meditation.
  • I will meditate at that fixed time in any case.
  • I will make the full use of the time.

Self- Meditation: The Discovery of Soul

It is essential for the human being of modern age to know and practice self-Meditation. Self-Meditation is a wonderful process of realizing religion in life. Meditation is of phonetic form and an essence of religion. Self- Meditation is the easiest and speedy path to reach the innate nature of soul.

Self -Meditation Is the Realization of Inner Self

Self-Meditation is the realization of inner self. It is impossible to communicate/ make you understand realization in its totality. Khalil Gibran has said, “I used to define love majestically till my heart filled with the sentiment of love. But the moment I realized love, all the definitions proved futile in communicating that Meditation. Similarly is the case with the Meditation of meditation.

Self –Meditation is the Essence of Religion

Meditation is to enter into the real nature of self, free from attachment and aversion. Religion and science are supplement to each other and are the two sides of the same discovery. The discovery of science is related to external world, whereas that of religion is of inner self. While science takes one away from the self, religion brings him closer to the self. The name of this closeness is meditation. Meditation is the root of religion, reality of religion. The meaning and core of religion is meditation.

Self–Meditation is the Art of Living in Present

Self-Meditation is the practice (sadhana) to live in the reality of present moment, free from past memories and future imaginations. Generally, man feels misery because he is unable to accept the realities of life as it is, with ease. He attempts to change these according to his mind and is the unacceptability of reality of life. While the meditation is merely the practice of truth. To accept the present moment in a positive manner is the sole aim of meditation.

Self–Meditation is the Practice of Psychic Stoppage & Cessation (Samvara & Nirjara) of Karmas

Self- Meditation is psychic stoppage. To cease the influx of fresh impurity is stoppage (samvara). Meditation is purification of the soul. It is process of annihilating old accumulated internal impurity. To cope with the present circumstances with equilibrium of mind is Right conduct and that is meditation. Not doing any effort to retain the present situation as it was or to keep it away, and only maintaining one’s equilibrium is the practice of psychic equanimity (bhava samayika) and it is also meditation as well.

The process of arousing Mahavirahood-- Self–Meditation

How to attain purity, how to illuminate the inner self like sun, how we become solemn-- glum like sea, how to attain the eternal state of enlightened/ liberated and how to attain the state of omniscience. All these attributes are inherent in us. Mahavirahood, Buddhahood and Yogahood are inherent in us but in form of seed, are slept and undeveloped. The very practice to develop these seeds is self- Meditation.

Self- Meditation: the practice of state of Knower and Perceiver

Acharya Amitagati has preached, “Absolute soul in form of bliss, free from entire volition-vikalpa, always remain engrossed in nature, Yogin himself knows the reality.” Thus the state of tranquillity and silence, where there is neither volition nor vikalpa, is meditation. Through the natural process of inhaling and exhaling, observing the sound of So^ham, thought starts pacifying. After all thoughts are pacified, to remain in the state of innate knower and perceiver, beyond mind, body and speech, is self-Meditation.

The Benediction of All

Through self-Meditation, the practitioner/seeker gets the experience of living a relaxed, simple, tension free and every moment blissful life. The seeker gets rid of incurable diseases, presently at increase, increase in working capacity, sweetness in mutual relations, and expansion of magnanimity of heart above intellect. He experiences the feeling of welfare of the whole world or the benediction of whole living beings. The self-Meditation brings benediction in one’s self, in family and in universe. It leads to ll-round evolution of human being as well as religion of humanity and it gets benediction of the universe. Self- Meditation facilitates the sacred path of benediction of all. Self- Meditation is the bridge between the welfare of the universe and welfare of self. It spreads the spirit of welfare and benediction everywhere. Meditation is the communicator of the feeling of benediction and welfare of all.

Self-Meditation: Return to the Original State

Every entity has its original state, for example, that of water is coldness. To heat up the water one has to make effort. Put it on the fire. We have to make some external effort through electricity or through the heat of sun to make the water hot. But again it will return to the original state after sometime if effort is withdrawn. What is the original state of water? Coldness. Similarly, what is the original state of fire? Hotness. Likewise you also have an original state, i.e. original state of your being. Whatever is your to return to that original state of your’s is self- Meditation. It is state of detached, state of knower and perceiver.

Powerful means of stability-- Self- Meditation

Self- Meditation is prime among all the rituals. Herein the seeker reaches trans-mind fast and the velocity of mind is obstructed very soon. Sometimes, it appears that mind is not stable during meditation but it gets absorbed in prayer, self-study etc. It is because during prayer and self-study, mind receives new thoughts hence its fickleness is not noticed but during meditation as the mind is concentrating on single subject the fickleness of mind is noted straightaway.

Awakening in Restraint: Self- Meditation

Meditation is indispensable for monks because without meditation enthusiasm and vigour in observing the vows in restraint life is difficult. Some monks do live the restrained life but devoid of enthusiasm, because their interest is missing in restraint. One may easily control the body and speech but to control the mind is very tough. Unless the mind is controlled the practice performed with speech and body is not much beneficial, because inner is not connected with it. Meditation making the mind, speech and body restrained, turns all the activities full of consciousness. Restraint becomes quite interesting to the seeker who is engrossed in meditation. “Raso vai sah” He is Rasa and nothing is more blissful for him than meditation.

Self- Meditation is the Bath of Self

Bathing is two-fold: physical bath and that of soul. Purity of the body is achieved through bath by water, while soul is purified by bath in form of meditation. As water-bath makes our body fresh, neat and remove tiredness, in the same way through bath in form of meditation soul becomes pure. By taking bath in lake like meditation, getting rid of anger etc. passions and violence etc. blemishes you become pure, enlightened, unstained (niranjana), which is your true self also.

Source of Truth Acknowledgement:Self- Meditation

Every one professes to speak truth but rarely one likes to listen the bitter and harsh truth and only a hero is able to absorb this truth wholly. Only he can fully absorb the truth who has realized the truth within himself, who has perceived the truth within himself. Meditation cultivates tolerance and power of continuous practice of meditation leads the seeker to absolute truth. Thus meditation increases the power of listening and absorbing the truth with equanimity.

Indispensability of Self- Meditation

Owing to ultra-modern researches physicians are bound to accept that psycho- physical diseases can be cured through meditation. Dr. Venson writes in ‘The Physiology of Meditation’, “In modern society serious diseases like blood- pressure etc. owing to mental disorder etc. cause excitement in smipathetic nervous system. In self-meditation, the excitement having subsided, diseases are cured automatically.

Internal Background of Self- Meditation

Having withdrawn our attention from external environment we fully connect our mind through natural inhaling-exhaling with the sound of So^ham’. By repeated observation of the sound of So^ham’, the thought gets gradually pacified, when thought are pacified, we remain in soul. To remain in soul is the occurrence of meditation. Doing to being is meditation. We can not pacify thought by force. The more we shall attempt to control thought; the series of thoughts will be on the rise. Thus, to observe thought, as knower and perceiver is meditation.

Self - Meditation: Practice of three controls (trigupti)

In aphorism of Kayotsargasutra, it is mentioned, “Thanenam monenam jhanenam appanam vosirami”. I abandon myself with the steadiness of body, silence of speech and meditation. Thanenam- steadiness of body, Monenam- Silence of speech Jhanenam – by making mind steady in meditation, withdrawing from evil thoughts and get stable in silence. We may term it the practice of three controls (trigupti). To keep mind, speech and body in control is trigupti, the very core and vital force of ascetic life. In this state of control over three guptis, occurs the cessation (nirjara) of innumerable karmas.

The Breath – a bridge between body and soul

Breath will easily carry you to soul. Therefore I adopted the medium of breathing. If you recite a mantra or an incantation, repeatedly reciting of that mantra is chanting (japa), not meditation. To recite mantra (japa) is not an evil, it is good, but it is not meditation. Here, we have to meditate. Nothing to join with breathing, no mantra, no form, no colour, no shape, nothing except pure, natural and inherent breath. Only to sit in calm.

Self - Meditation - Self - Purification

Following aspects are included in the self- purification:

  • Physical purity - through various ancient yogic activities,
  • Purity of speech - through restraint in speech and practice of silence,
  • Purity of food - As you eat so shall be your mind, feeling and experience of pure diet.
  • Vital purity - through breathing exercises (pranayama) and various sounds.
Purity of mind - purification of mind through meditation and equanimity, the mind which is vilified by vices and ill thoughts, realization of pure consciousness.

Thus it is a complete practice. The entire purity of soul.  During the practice of self-meditation, there will be a special experiment on above-mentioned purifications.

Self - Meditation - Purity of Self

Bliss is our nature, peace is within us and we are the knowledge ourselves.

  • Why then human being is trapped in the cakravyuha of sorrow and pain.
  • Why then he is troubled with restlessness.
  • Why then is he roaming in darkness and ignorance?

The answer to all these questions lies in the distance from self.

Just the Introduction/ initiation to the self brings the feeling of well being in body, peace of mind and bliss within. For self’s introduction purity of the self is essential.

Through  the perpetual  journey in state of knower and seer, the soul is purified. As the darkness disappears as soon as the sun rises similarly with the rise of the state of knower and the perceiver of the soul, the darkness of ignorance and unrest disappears.

Meditation on Omkara

First take a deep breathe in, then while breathing out utter two syllables (letters) O&M separately. Again utter O&M in continuation. Then Utter O and M in ratio of 2:1 of the length of Breath. If anyone unable to do as above mentioned should utter Om with deep breathing.

Utter Omkar at least 3, 11, 21, 51 and 108 times. Thus taking deep breathe and uttering. After uttering calmly meditate on Omkara. Between the two utterances there should be interval.

Meditation & Sleep

There is a similarity between meditation and sleep. In meditation also you are in a state of doing nothing like in the sleep. But in sleep you are not even aware of yourself, because you are faint but in meditation you are wholly ware of yourself because you are Aconscious. So if awareness is added to sleep it will become meditation. Or if faintness is added to the meditation it will become asleep.

Expiatory Recitals or Repentance (Pratikramana)

Tassa Micchami Dukkadam
Mi – My (Mera)
Tassa – He
Duskritya- Ill deed
Miccha- Be false

It is not any sort of command, promise or declaration. It is experience. When someone consciously recollects again and again his routine, he recalls his acts performed non - vigilantly or as a doer, his acts may be good or evil.  In practice it may also be charity and theft too. But whatever was committed it was due to delusion, under the effect of anger, pride, deceit or greed.  When he observes all that as knower or perceiver, it appears like dream.  That is tassa micchami dukkadam.

Suitable Time for Practising Meditation

There is no specific time for meditation. One can meditate when one has time or is suits to his routine. However, it is desirable to fix a particular time for meditation. To meditate at an appointed time sustains the practice. But if unable to fix a definite time one must meditate according to his convenience.

Meditation Why?

If we meditate having some expectation, the meditation will not be possible because mind will get cling to that expectation. For example, if I have to meditate for mental peace, then while sitting in meditation I will wait for mental peace and will not be able to meditate. Therefore, one should meditate without any expectation and without any desire. Expectation is not meditation.

Self - Meditation in Group

Through practice of meditation in group each seeker gets support of each other. The enthusiasm and stability increase in practice. If there are more than one practitioner in a family and they practice together daily, or even weekly, if not possible daily, that practice in group will bring peace, equanimity and bliss in family. Mutual problems are also solved naturally.

Fruits of Self - Meditation

Equanimity is the ultimate result and supreme goal of meditation. How long we can sit in meditation is not the criterion of progress of meditation. The paradigm of success of meditation lies in the usual or normal relaxation, equanimity, silence and politeness in life. Equanimity is the basis for other practical and spiritual achievements. Equanimity is supreme wealth, is religion. With the dawn of equanimity in life other virtues follow in the same way as army follows the commander.

Self-Meditation: Means of liberation from Karma

The greatness of Seers(arihantas) and liberated ones(siddhas) is infinite. Our aim is to be like them, it is our resolve, and our effort must be to practise on this path. The practice of meditation is not freedom from tension, pain and sorrow. It is the practice to attain salvation, to get freedom from cycle
of birth and death. Soul is roaming in four states of birth(caturgati) from time immemorial.

One, who realizes it, is bound to make effort to get rid of it. The soul dwells within body, soul is possessed of eight qualities and its qualities are obscured by eight karmas. For manifestation of the eight qualities of soul, the annihilation of eight karmas is essential. For the annihilation of eight karmas, meditation and body relaxation (kayotsarga) are the excellent means. Impressions (samskara) accumulated during the series of previous births may be annihilated even through the practice of one equanimity (samayika)only. We should give importance to vitaraga samayika, the practice of meditation and body relaxation(kayotsarga) in life.

Awake – The Perception of Soul

Liberation (moksha) is the state of your mind. If there is perception of soul, sinful activity will not bind. In absence of perception of soul sinful activity will bind. There should be discretion within us. If there is discretion soul-perception will follow and there will not be karma-bondage. The perception of soul brings natural peace of mind and the eight karmas clung to the soul, will be annihilated automatically. We have to make effort to annihilate only four out of eight karmas. And even out of four karmas we have to annihilate only deluding (mohaniya) karma. If this deluding karma is annihilated we shall attain knowledge of self. Knowledge is within us we have only to realize it. For its realization practice of meditation is needed. One who practises meditation would positively realize the knowledge of self.

What is Pure Equanimity of Unattached (shuddhavitaragasamayika)?

In Jain tradition, the practice of equanimity is called samayika. In samayika, mournful (arta) and revengeful (raudra) types of meditation are prohibited, i.e. thought of me and my and of hurting others is prohibited. Generally equanimity is three-fold-

(1) Inauspicious Equanimity (ashubha samayika),
(2) Auspicious Equanimity (shubha samayika),
(3) Pure Equanimity (shuddha samayika ),

  • Inauspicious Equanimity (ashubha samayika)

The duration of equanimity of a house-holder(shravaka samayika) is forty-eight minutes while that of a monk is life-long. If after performing equanimity (samayika)  talk of a house- holder or  a monk is full of jealousy, hatred, ill will, backbiting, pride, insult, deceit, greed and selfishness, his

samayika will be inauspicious and its consequences will be sin and the fruits of sinful activity are inauspicious existence of birth(ashubha gati)--plant and animal kingdom and infernal life.

  • Auspicious Equanimity (shubha samayika)

After performing equanimity, prayer, hymn, chanting (japa), eulogy, self-study etc. activities are performed. If these activities are performed with pure disposition it causes cessation (nirjara) of  accumulated karmas. If performed with auspicious disposition it brings virtues. During performing this type of equanimity, there is generally auspicious disposition. Its fruit is birth in the state of human being ( manusya gati) or divine state (devagati).

  • Pure Equanimity (shuddha samayika)

In this type of equanimity, who am I? What is my nature? What is the aim of my life?Having become aware of these questions one remains in the state of unattached. That kind of equanimity which is performed free of thirty two blemishes is vitaraga samayika. Herein ten blemishes(doshas)

each  pertaining to mind and speech andtwelve  pertaining to body are removed.

What Efforts to Make for Attaining Abode of Liberated Ones(Siddhalaya)

Reflect on loneliness while living in the world. You are alone in the whole universe, absolutely alone in fifteen lands of action. A pure soul existent in the body of an aspirant / practitioner / seeker, whose aim is to discover the Supreme soul, hidden in your soul. Neither you have attachment nor hatred with anyone. You know, recognize and accept that this soul is roaming in the endless cycle of birth and death from time immemorial. By entering into the immeasurable depth of meditation you should make every effort to liberate your soul from the entire destructive karmas. These destructive karmas are densely clinging all-round the soul and do all you can to take back the soul to the fifth state, the abode of liberated ones(siddhalaya), getting it out of cycle of state of four births(gatis).

Nature of soul

Neither I am older nor younger, neither monk nor house-holder, neither good nor bad, neither full of virtues nor full of vices, neither rich nor poor, neither wise nor foolish, neither superior nor inferior, I am just only a pure soul. A pure, enlightened, spotless or void of passion, formless, indestructible, immortal, eternal and true in present, past and future.

Sense of Gratitude

Have a sense of gratitude with each breath. Your gratitude should be dedicated to Enlightened, in the feet of gods and goddesses, in the feet of your teacher who associated you with the religion of detached(vitaraga). There should be a sole aim whether eyes are closed or open—I and my abode of liberated, just I will go there, return there, remain there. None is mine, to experience this loneliness, to live in loneliness, thus get strengthened the feeling of loneliness.

Process of Karma destruction: Science of Differentiation (Bhedajnana)

Generally, a person feels I am not free, I have so many problems—that of house, of family, of occupation, so how can I practise? But jiva (soul) may annihilate karmas if he desires through knowledge of science of differentiation (bhedajnana) even amidst staying in these problems. For contemplation on the self, the activities of body and its works are not a hindrance. What is needed is the perception of soul and feeling of free experiences. Thus every soul is free to make effort for self-purification.

Science of Differentiation (Bhedavijnana)

I am a pure soul, body is resting, sleeping is the nature of body, and laziness is the nature of body. I (soul) have no sleep, no laziness; I am pure soul, only knower and perceiver. With this feeling we can save ourselves from bondage of karma, during our sleep at night. Otherwise, there will be bondage of  karma whole night.Similarly after getting up in the morning just observe that laziness, non-vigilance was in body. I (soul) was vigilant the whole night. Only there is one absolute practice, science of  differentiation (bhedavijnana) where is no bondage but is liberation.

Nature of So^ham

So means that venerable liberated one,
Aham i.e I a pure soul. Both are the same.
So means those beings (souls) of hell and body of micro-organism and I (aham) with regard to the pure self, are same.
So means all those souls of animal and plant kingdoms and I the pure soul are the same.
So means those deities of twenty six heavens and I (soul) are the same.
So means those enlightened, liberated, Acharya, Upadhyaya, monks and I (soul) are the same.
The souls, roaming in six directions and I (soul) are just the same.
In this way, there is maximum cessation of karma by meditation on So^aham. This is the path of all detached (liberated ones).

Mangala Yatri

No sign traceable of hatred and Ill-will
In body, mind, vitality, spread of love & goodwill.
Awake! O people of world, black night gone.
At day break Religion shown as happiness of dawn.
All speak of Religion knowing it rarely.
Conduct with purity of mind is religion only.
Neither Hindu, Buddhist, nor Sikkha, Muslim, Jain is religion.
Religion is unity of mind, peace, pleasure and joy are religion.
No discrimination exists among human being where.
Benediction of all, pure religion flourishes there.
This is the religion’s obligation, also its disposition.
Pure, pious and sacred becomes who bears one.
Communality is not religion; partition is not its creation.
Religion preaches unity, Religion teaches amity.
May god neither I am afflicted, nor any grieved in the world.
Life is art of living, this is the real religion.
